Mothers in Scripture - Sarah and Hagar

Writer: Kelly Sullivan YonceKelly Sullivan Yonce

Today’s focus is heavy because our story has two Mama’s and two truths – one where we find the path to God’s people and another where we find a broken family, a single mother, jealousy, and a lot of confusion.

📚 Genesis 21 is where we get the story. We know that Abraham was the Father of many nations and God promised he’d have descendants as numerous as the stars. The path, however, was as rocky as testimonies across the world today.

Abraham’s wife Sarah impatiently waited for the child God promised, and sent her servant Hagar to lay with her husband. Insert jealousy, insert a love child, and then add to that dysfunction when both women have sons 👶👶 and Sarah sends Hagar and her son off to the desert 🏜️.

I’d imagine the worry that Sarah had, trying to plot and plan for herself. She knew that all eyes were on her to fulfil this great promise that her husband was singing about. I’d imagine the jealousy of worrying over the favor of someone else. But then we cannot forget the pain of Hagar, alone with no husband, sent off to the desert, praying her son doesn’t starve.

If you’ve been part of dysfunction, you know the toll it bears. Sarah’s son Isaac prompted the Israelite lineage, and Hagar’s son was sent to the desert. Maybe this day evokes reminders of a broken family, wounded matriarchs, forgotten children, and more. One biblical truth that we can’t turn our back on is that God cared about both children, which is shown as he provided water ⛲ in the desert for Hagar and her son. It would take an entire devotional to explain how Sarah and Abraham’s choice impacted our history and the current state of our world.

If your Mother’s Day is riddled with brokenness, these truths stand out:

1. Sometimes His plans must consist of us being patient.

2. There is power in forgiveness, power in trusting God, and power in mercy.

3. God loves and shows mercy on children from broken families.

4. When our families are broken, we can still fulfil God’s purpose.

This Mama’s Day, if your heart or home is broken, know that God can and will still use you if you seek His perfect will. 🙌
