We can't discuss mothers in the Bible without turning to 1 Samuel 1 📚 and discussing Hannah.
Hannah was unable to conceive, and was ridiculed for it by her husband's other wife. She mourned this truth to the point of weeping and not eating.
One day, she went to the sanctuary and prayed so emotionally and emphatically that the words weren't even coming from her lips and the priest Eli thought she was drunk.
Let's pause there. Maybe you're a mother. Maybe you're a woman struggling with the grim reality of infertility. Maybe you're neither. Hannah taught us so much about character and grief. While she was suffering, she felt inadequate. While she was suffering, she had pain that nobody else in that moment could understand, though to her it was palpable. Yet, while she was suffering she brought her raw unfiltered grief to the Lord.
Whether you've suffered the same way as Hannah, or begged God to fill a space inside of you, we can all take Hannah's example. She was humble and meek, honest in her pain before God, and most of all she trusted. There is so much power and strength in trust. 🌻 Hannah threw herself at God's feet and promised to give her son to the Lord if conceived. She was willing to give everything she had as an offering. 👶 The priest Eli prayed for Hannah and she indeed bore a son. In fact, she went on to have more children.
We all know first hand you don't always get what you pray for. Sometimes we don't have Hannah's ending. 🙏
But we can learn, whatever we have belongs to the Lord. Our own children, our careers, our possessions, our emotions, our relationships.
As we approach Mother's day we will talk about more mothers from scripture. It's so important to begin with Hannah. Some are still grieving greatly over loss of their own mother, or the loss of a child that's not in their lives. Some are mourning the loss of their children to a life outside of God's will. All have some empty space for God to work on. But God - He's merciful, hears our pain, and is working for our good. Today, present your heart to Him and let Him work on any space that needs filling. 🙌
