Mothers in Scripture - Mary

Writer: Kelly Sullivan YonceKelly Sullivan Yonce

Today we discuss Mary, mother to Jesus🙌. I think of the first conversation where she learned she'd conceive, as a virgin, the King of Kings👶. I think of the anguish of watching her son be crucified, and I think of her remarkable composure through it all.

We don't read much about Jesus's childhood, or how Mary parented; however the Cana wedding stands out. Not only is it the first documented miracle, but it is also an event where we see an exchange between Jesus and his mother.

📚 John 2 is where it unfolds. At an important wedding at Cana in Galilee, the wine runs out, and Mary goes to Jesus. His response is not something we should say to Mamas today so tread lightly (though He was not being disrespectful). "Woman, why do you involve me. My hour has not yet come."

Mary's reply is gold - she tells the servants to do whatever Jesus tells them. Water is turned to wine🍷, the wedding is saved👰, and the disciples get a glimpse of something that Mary already knew.

Some things we may never know. At a young age did Mary and Jesus ever discuss who He was? Did Jesus ever need to be consoled? Did he ever fall and have Mary pick Him up? What we do know is that she was there for Him - from the pains of childbirth to watching Him be crucified. She had faith in His ability and didn't let anything stop her from encouraging Him.

The paths of our children can be terrifying - whether it's toward success or failure. In all of these Mamas we've discussed, one thing is certain - we can trust in the promises and plans of God. We can show compassion, pray hard, get through rough patches, and come out on the other end more faithful than ever. Whether you're a Mama, Daddy, part of someone's village, or maybe none of the above - we can take the same approach as Mary and be open to the power of Jesus in our everyday lives. 🙏
